As Chairman and COO of The Mayer Corporation, Robert L. Mayer, Jr., or “RJ”, as he is better known, has been personally involved in the construction of many of the family-owned Ambassador Inn Hotels, a 2,600-room chain and more recently, The Waterfront Beach Resort – A Hilton Hotel and the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. It has been said that RJ learned the family business from the ground up. As a licensed real estate agent, RJ was originally responsible for locating and assembling land for new residential construction and future hotel opportunities located in California, Nevada and Arizona, including the current site of The Waterfront’s commercial and residential development in Huntington Beach, California. As a licensed General Contractor in California, RJ has been an active partner in the development of several residential communities located in Laguna Woods, Riverside, Huntington Beach, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert.
The Mayer Corporation provided RJ the unique opportunity to blend life experience with career growth. As Vice President, RJ was originally responsible for the supervision of several operating assets, including the Villa Capri Apartments in Southern California and the Quality Inn Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Quality Inn Hotel was later renovated, repositioned and renamed the “Key Largo Hotel and Casino.” As the Director of the transition team responsible for the creation of a full-service hotel and casino in Las Vegas, RJ went through the licensing process requiring an exhaustive background investigation by the Nevada Gaming Commission. As a graduate of UNLVs Gaming Executive Education Program, RJ was licensed to own and operate a casino in the State of Nevada on an unrestricted basis.
In addition to his other responsibilities, RJ spearheads The Mayer Corporation and the extended Mayer family’s charitable activities and serves on the Board of Directors for various philanthropic organizations throughout Orange County. RJ is also an active participant in the Cal State Fullerton, Family Business Council. This association allows RJ the opportunity to share his knowledge, current issues and opportunities with other second-generation business owners. As a leader in the Hospitality industry, RJ has been appointed to represent other Hilton owners on the Hilton Worldwide Owners Council and also lends his business acumen as a board member of the California Hotel & Lodging Association, representing other hotel owners on industry issues statewide in Sacramento and Washington DC. In February 2020, RJ was appointed by the Board of Directors, to serve as Chair-Elect of the Orange County Business Council representing 200 of the largest employer’s in Orange County, CA.
RJ lives in Laguna Hills with his wife Rhonda of 30 years and enjoys spending time with his 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
